Basecamp for Recreation and Relaxation
Located at the foot of majestic Mt. Sopris, Carbondale, Colorado is a launch point for a mountain-full of activities that include outdoor, creative and leisure pursuits. The rugged setting is prime for mountain biking, alpine hiking and backcountry camping. Nestled next to the Roaring Fork River, Carbondale is also a hub for anglers intent on hooking the region’s native cutthroat trout. In winter, Spring Gulch Nordic Center becomes a haven for cross-country skiing enthusiasts. Noted for its thriving arts community, Carbondale is one of just five towns listed on the Colorado Creative Corridor. The state-level designation commends destinations with an abundance of arts and cultural experiences such as galleries, music and theater performances, as well as exceptional dining options. When it comes to deep relaxation, soaking in the hot springs at Avalanche Ranch provides a tranquil counterpoint to the hubbub of everyday life.

Overview: Tucked on a secluded hillside in the Crystal River Valley between Carbondale and Redstone, Avalanche Ranch is a hot springs rarity. The pastoral setting, cozy log cabins and natural geothermal springs evoke the beauty and peace of an earlier era. The 36-acre ranch is close to hiking and biking trails, river access for fishing, as well as to historical sites. But there’s no need to leave the grounds to enjoy the Colorado outdoors. The property features a stocked trout pond, a canoe that can be checked out as well as paddle boats. In winter, in addition to soaking, guests can enjoy snowshoeing, sledding, ice-skating and cross-country skiing.
Amenities:
- General: Avalanche Ranch is open to overnight guests 24/7. Day visitors can make reservations to soak from 9 a.m to 1 p.m. or 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The hot springs are closed for cleaning on Wednesdays.
- Pools: Designed around the natural landscape and rock formations, Avalanche Ranch features three hot springs pools that cascade from one to the next. Water temperatures range from 93˚ to 104˚F. The largest pool features a waterfall that veils a “secret” rock grotto. For added artistic flair, the pools and surrounding landscape are beautifully enhanced with creative natural and made-made elements.
- Spa: Avalanche Ranch offers yoga classes in both indoor and outdoor settings depending on the time of year. Massage services are also available but must be booked 24 hours in advance.
- Lodging: Cozy, inviting and unique, the lodging at Avalanche Ranch includes log cabins, a tiny house, a modern apartment loft and several repurposed sheepherding wagons. Lodging guests have unlimited access to the soaking pools.
